STEPS FOR IMPORTING USED VEHICLES IN AUSTRALIA
  • Vehicle Import Approval (VIA) must be obtained from the Vehicle Safety Standards Branch which resides in the Department of Transport, Infrastructure, Regional Development and, the Local Government.
  • All the applicable duties and tax like customs duty, GST, and Luxury Car Tax (LCT) must be paid to get clearance from the customs at the entry port.
  • Clearance from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) must be obtained after the arrival of the shipment at the entry port.
  • The import must possess a valid VIA to be able to obtain customs clearance.
  • Unless the National Standards of Australia are met by the vehicle, it is not allowed to import or sell used vehicles in Australia.
  • The Customs may give Self-Assessed Clearance (SAC) declaration if the vehicle has the road value less than the threshold for import entry.
  • A quote must be obtained for all fees, duties and taxes, and customs clearance.
  • The car must be purchased authentically from the seller by means of an authorized agent or a letter of credit which is obtained from the bank.
  • A Customs broker at the port should be given all the necessary documents to eliminate the risk of mistakes or you must do the clearance yourself.
  • Customs brokers may help you in evaluating the lesser value of the car to be able to save on duties.
  • When clearance from the Customs and AQIS is obtained, the vehicle can be delivered.
