DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
The documents necessary for the import of used vehicles are submitted to the BURS.
  • Title and Registration certificate
  • Purchase invoice
  • Police clearance certificate (from both the police service of Botswana and Japan)
  • Vehicle evaluation (to be obtained from the Japanese used car dealer)
  • IC2 Application (to be obtained from the destination agent and to be submitted to the Ministry of Commerce)
  • Proof of ownership
  • CE-101 Form (to be submitted to the Customs and Excise Department along with import permit, passport, and residence permit)
  • Import permit (to be obtained from the Ministry of Commerce)
  • Customs Declaration Form (SAD 500)
Customs clearance of the used Japanese car is necessary for importation in Botswana.
GUIDELINES FOR NON-RESIDENTS OF BOTSWANA
The non-residents who belong to countries outside of the Southern African Common Customs Area and want to bring their vehicles in Botswana for a limited duration need to submit documents like bill of entry or carnet of the used cars. The duty applicable to the import of the used cars from Japan will be obtained by cash or bond.
GUIDELINES FOR RESIDENTS OF BOTSWANA
Residents of Botswana are not allowed to use the vehicles imported from foreign countries for more than 14 days from the day of import. If somebody intends to use the foreign-registered vehicle in Botswana, then he/she must contact the Customs office. Defaulters would be charged penalties and even the vehicle could be seized.
GUIDELINES FOR FOREIGN DIPLOMAT
Foreign diplomats are given exemption from duties and taxes. For availing exemption, they have to produce the certificate of diplomatic clearance and proof of value. The importer has to get the used Japanese vehicle registered in Botswana and the driver’s license should be changed within 6 months of arrival.
