Left-hand drive used Japanese cars are permitted for import in Bulgaria. Japan used cars to be imported in Bulgaria are inspected prior to the registration.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • Passport (copy)
  • Ownership proof of the vehicle (original title certificate)
  • Commercial or purchase invoice (the vehicle must have been owned for by the owner for more than 6 months)
  • Insurance proof
  • Proforma invoice (to be prepared by the agent in the origin country)
  • EUR1 certificate
  • Visa
  • Driver’s license
  • Foreign certificate of registration
CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
  • If the used vehicles from Japan are intended to be temporarily imported in Bulgaria, then it is permitted for no more than 6 months.
  • Written permission is required by the Government of Bulgaria to import foreign used vehicles.
  • Import tariff of 10% and 20% VAT is applicable for the import for used Japanese vehicles.
  • Exemption in duty is allowed for a Bulgarian citizen if the vehicle has been owned by him/her for no less than 6 months and driven for no less than 6000 km.
  • For non-residents of Bulgaria, all the duties and taxes are applicable to import a vehicle.
  • Import duty and an environmental tax (Eco tax) are imposed if the vehicle has been imported from outside the European Union. The amount of the Eco tax is based on the age of the used Japanese vehicle.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES
  • Identity proof
  • Receipt or bill of sale (original)
  • Residency proof or contract of employment
  • Roadworthiness certificate
  • Registration documents of the vehicle
  • Receipt of payment of the Bulgarian vehicle tax
  • Minimum third party insurance proof
  • Driver’s license
  • A document proving that the customs duty has been paid (for non-EU/EEA vehicles)
Once the imported Japan used vehicle is registered in Bulgaria, then the owner can not sell the vehicle for at least a year.
