GUIDELINES FOR IMPORTING A VEHICLE IN ETHIOPIA
  • High rates of duties and taxes are applicable to the import of used Japanese vehicles in Ethiopia.
  • Bill of Lading is required for the importation of used vehicles with details such as chassis number, engine number, year of manufacture, model number, brand, and cubic capacity.
  • Certificate of Title (original), invoice for vehicle registration and the purchase is necessary for the import of used vehicles from Japan.
  • The customer’s driver license and international insurance policy are also required.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • Title and Registration certificate
  • Bill of Lading (BOL)
  • Commercial Invoice
  • Driver’s license and International Insurance Policy (green card)
  • Letter of Support (to be provided by the non-diplomats, private organizations, NGOs, schools, etc.)
  • Authorization from the Road Authority Transport and Communication Ministry (to be issued by an organization or Diplomatic Mission to the shipper)
TAXATION
The duties and taxes imposed on the import of Japan used cars depend on the cylinder capacity of the spark-ignition engine used in the car.
  • For vehicles with 1000cc-1300cc engine: 35% Duty Rate, 30% Excise Tax, 10% Surplus Tax
  • For vehicles with 1300cc-1800cc engine: 35% Duty Rate, 60% Excise Tax, 10% Surplus Tax
  • For vehicles with 1300cc and above engine: 35% Duty Rate, 100% Excise Tax, 10% Surplus Tax
  • For vehicles with less than 1300cc engine: 35% Duty Rate, 30% Excise Tax, 10% Surplus Tax
  • For vehicles with 1300cc-1500cc engine: 35% Duty Rate, 60% Excise Tax, 10% Surplus Tax
