DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • Proof of residence
  • Certificates of purchase and customs clearance (to be issued by the Center des Impots)
  • Foreign Registration Certificate (copy)
  • Attestation of conformity (copy, to be issued by the manufacturer of the agent)
  • Identity proof
  • French Controle technique certificate (technical test certificate, required if the vehicle is 4 years and above in age)
Declaration of distribution and a form for the vehicle’s additional information is to be filled by the applicant. Then for the examination of Japan used vehicles, a report will be delivered to the DREAL which will then notify the applicant about when the vehicle is to be presented for the examination. Approval will be given by the DREAL after the vehicle passes the test. Then to get the new number plate, the statement of approval from the DREAL, the Caste Grise, and the new registration number should be taken to the Prefecture or the Sous-Prefecture.
TAXATION
  • 5% to 17% of import customs will be charged for the import of the used Japanese cars.
  • 19.6% of the cumulative of the CIF value and import customs will be charged as VAT.
  • EUR 34 per horsepower will be charged as a registration fee. The fee would be half the amount if the used car is more than 10 years old.
  • Eco Supercharge is also applicable.
  • If the used vehicle to be imported is no more than 6 months old and has been driven for no more than 6000 km, then VAT will be charged and calculated on the invoice price. If this condition is not met, then the reduction in the amount will be made as per the age of the car.
  • Customs duty will be charged if the vehicle has been imported from a country outside of the EU.
  • Customs duty is exempted if the car has been imported from a country inside of the EU. For this exemption, purchase and registration documents of the car are required.
  • The rate of Customs duty imposed is based on the country of origin and the value of the vehicle in France.
After the VAT is paid by the importer or has availed the exemption, a Customs Certificate will be provided to the importer to be able to register Japan used car in France. The registration must be done within 3 months after the vehicle is imported.
If the vehicle is being imported from a country outside of the EU:
  • If the vehicle imported from Japan is intended for personal usage and all the necessary taxes and duties are paid in the origin country itself, then no duty will be levied on the import of the vehicle.
  • The importer must have lived abroad for no less than a year and has owned the vehicle for more than 6 months.

  • Proof of residence
  • Certificates Administrative Situation (Certificat de situation administrative, to be provided by the seller)
  • Completed Registration Certificate (Certificat d'immatriculation)
  • Identity proof
  • Transfer certificate and document of sale (Certificat de cession, to be obtained from the previous owner)
  • Document of registration (to be obtained from the previous owner, should include the date of sale, the signature of the previous owner, and stamp from the dealer)
  • Technical inspection certificate (Controle technique, for cars that are above 4 years old)
