Left-hand-drive used Japanese vehicles are permitted for import in Germany.
A Technical Inspection certificate is necessary for Japan used cars to be imported in Germany. The used vehicles have to go through Fahrzeug-Hauptuntersuchung inspection which is commonly known as TUV.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
- Identity proof (copy, eg.- password)
- A document confirming the registration of the residence
- Title and Registration certificate (copy)
- Export permit
- A document stating the proof of ownership (eg.- commercial invoice, bill of sale, etc., required for the vehicles that were owned for no more than 6 months) Insurance Card of the vehicle from Japan
- Registration papers of the vehicle (original)
- Third-Party Liability Insurance
- A document validating the completion of the Roadworthiness and emissions test of the vehicle
TAXATION
- 10% Import duty will be applied to the Cost and Freight (C&F) of Japan used cars for export.
- 19% tax will be implied to the Cost and Freight (C&F) of Japan used vehicles for export.
- Special motor vehicle tax (Kfz-Steuer), which is applied to all registered vehicles in the country.
EXEMPTION ON DUTY
- The buyer of the vehicle has lived outside the European Union (EU) for no less than a year.
- The vehicle has been purchased outside the EU and been driven for no less than 6 months before its import.
- The buyer has been registered as a citizen of Germany.
- The buyer is purchasing the vehicle for personal use.
- The buyer keeps the vehicle for at least a year after importing it.
