Right-hand drive used Japanese vehicles are permitted for import in Jamaica.
From 1st February 2018, all the used vehicles to be imported in Jamaica will have to go through pre-shipment inspection.
IMPORT REGULATIONS ON VEHICLES WITH USED TYRES
- Cars: Max. 5 years old
- Pickups: Max. 6 years old
- Motorcycles: Max. 5 years old
- Heavy-duty vehicles like trucks, etc. : Max. 30 years old
- Special vehicles like ambulances, etc. : Max. 10 years old
FOR BUSES
- Having a seating capacity of 15-29: Max. 12 years old
- Having a seating capacity of 30-44: Max. 14 years old
- Having a seating capacity of 45 and above: Max. 20 years old
FOR TRUCKS
- Having a loading capacity of 3000-4000 kg: Max. 15 years old
- Having a loading capacity of 4001-5000 kg: Max. 14 years old
- Having a loading capacity of more than 8000 kg: Max. 25 years old
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR IMPORT OF VEHICLES
- Import license (to be issued by the Trade Board Ltd.)
- Document of Title
- A document stating odometer inspection details
- 2 Identity proofs (passport, driving license, or other)
- Bill of Lading
- Import Entry ( Form C-87, to be presented to the Customs)
- Invoice (from the supplier)
- Bill of Sight
- Tax Compliance (to be issued by the Tax Administration Certificate Services Department)
- Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC, to be obtained from the Revenue Board)
- Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN, to be obtained from the Revenue Board)
- Simplified Administrative Document (eSAD, to be completed by the Customs broker)
TAXATION
- 10%-20% of Import duty will be imposed depending upon the type of vehicle to be imported.
- 17.5% General Consumption Tax (GCT) will be charged on the import of all used vehicles. Exemption on GCT may be given on some items.
- Special Consumption Tax (SCT) will be charged on petroleum products and depends on the type of item to be imported.
- 20% Common External Tariff (CET) will be charged for the import for used Japanese cars and pickups and 10% for vehicles like trucks, vans, and buses.
- 0.5% of the CIF value will be imposed as Environmental Levy for the import of all used vehicles from Japan.
- For the import of vehicles like motorcycles, truck cabs, pickups, or pickup beds, a permit issued by the Trade Board Ltd. is required.
- All the invoices must be submitted to the Customs to determine the value of the vehicle for the duty charges.
- Damaged vehicles are prohibited for import in Jamaica.
- The individuals residing in Jamaica and the returning residents are allowed to import 2 vehicles and could do this once in a duration of every 3 years
- 1 car and 1 light commercial vehicle, or
- 2 commercial vehicles, or
- 1 light commercial vehicle and 1 regular commercial vehicle
- Non-Jamaicans are required to present their Work Permit as an immigration status proof.
- Returning residents who have used an old car for at least 6 months are allowed to import the car in Jamaica. An approval from the Trade Board Ltd. is required.
- If the importer intends to sell the vehicle after importation, then he/she must give a 90 days warranty.
- Certificate of Fitness along with the documents of Import duty is required for the registration of the vehicle. These documents should be submitted to the Revenue Service Center or the Tax Collectorate.
