Only right-hand-drive used Japanese vehicles are permitted for import in Mauritius.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • An invoice stating FOB and CIF value of the vehicle (original)
  • Bill of Lading or airway bill
  • Bill of Entry
  • Insurance certificate (if required)
  • Inspection certificate (if required)
  • Certificate of origin (if required)
  • Certificate of cancellation of registration
  • Import permit
These documents should be presented to the Customs and Excise Department prior to the clearance of the vehicle.
CONDITIONS IMPLIED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES IN MAURITIUS
  • The condition of the used Japanese vehicle should be good. It should not be damaged.
  • The chassis of the used car from Japan should be new.
  • The car should not have a bullbar.
TAXATION
The vehicles to be imported in Mauritius have tariff rates of duty according to the country of origin of the vehicle. The general rate of duty will be imposed on all used vehicles imported from foreign countries. For countries having a trade agreement with Mauritius, the preferential rate of duty will be imposed which could be less or zero as per the preferential mentioned in the agreement. The Excise duty imposed on the import of Japan used vehicles depends on the engine capacity.
FOR MOTORCARS
  • Having less than 550cc engine, 15% excise duty will be imposed.
  • Having 550cc to 1600cc engine, 55% excise duty will be imposed.
  • Having more than 1600cc engine, 100% excise duty will be imposed.
FOR VANS
  • Having 1600cc or less engine, 55% excise duty will be imposed.
  • Having more than 1600cc engine, 100% excise duty will be imposed.
FOR TRUCKS
  • For trucks having an engine of any size, 40% excise duty will be imposed.
FOR MOTORCYCLE
  • Having a 250cc engine, 45% excise duty will be imposed.
