Left-hand drive used Japanese cars are allowed for import in Rwanda. Right-hand-drive Japan used cars are allowed only for a period of 2 weeks.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • Title and Registration certificate (original)
  • Bill of Lading (original)
  • Passport (copy)
  • Commercial invoice
  • Driver’s license
  • Registration and de-registration certificates (of the country of origin)
  • International Insurance Policy (green card)
  • Exemption certificate of duties and taxes (if any)
  • Gift certificate (if the vehicle has been gifted to an organization which is permitted for exemption in duty for imports)
TAXATION
Duties and taxes imposed on the import of Japan used vehicles are:
  • 25% of Customs Duty
  • 18% VAT
  • 5% of Withholding tax
  • Consumption tax (rates vary)
REGISTRATION FEES
The registration fee charged on the import of used Japanese vehicles is based on the engine capacity of the vehicle. After the payment of the registration fees, the number plate and yellow card are provided to the vehicle’s owner.
  • For vehicles with 0-1000cc engine capacity, RWF75,000 is charged.
  • For vehicles with 1001cc-1500cc engine capacity, RWF1,60,000 is charged.
  • For vehicles with 1501cc-3000cc engine capacity, RWF2,50,000 is charged.
  • For vehicles with 3001cc-4500cc engine capacity, RWF4,20,000 is charged.
  • For vehicles with 4501cc and above engine capacity, RWF5,60,000 is charged.
  • For special vehicles, RWF6,40,000 is charged.
