Only left-hand-drive used Japanese cars are allowed for import in Sierra Leone. RoRo method is commonly used for exporting used Japanese vehicles in Sierra Leone. However, on the customer’s request, shipment through the container method can be arranged which is an expensive one.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • Residence permit
  • Bill of Lading (original)
  • Driver’s license and International Insurance Policy (green card)
  • Title and Registration certificate (original)
  • Commercial invoice (original)
  • Exemption Form (required for diplomats)
The Bill of Lading must clearly show the registration number, engine and chassis number, year of manufacture, cubic capacity, brand, and model of the used Japanese car.
TAXATION
Duties and taxes imposed on the import of Japan used vehicles are:
  • 5% Import duty will be applicable to the import of vehicles that are up to 4 years old.
  • 20% Import duty will be imposed for vehicles that are 4 to 10 years old.
  • 30% of Import duty will be imposed for vehicles above 10 years old.
