Left-hand-drive used Japanese vehicles are allowed for import in Somalia.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE IMPORT OF VEHICLES
Documents required for the import of Japan used vehicles in Somalia are:
  • Passport (certified copy stating dates of departure and return)
  • Certificate of valuation
  • Police clearance certificate (Interpol)
  • Registration and ownership certificate (original)
  • Purchase invoice (in English)
TAXATION
  • Returning Nationals are allowed exemption on duty for the import of one vehicle. Those who have lived abroad for more than 2 years are considered as Returning Nationals in Somalia.
  • The vehicle to be imported by a Returning National in Somalia must have been registered in the name of the shipper in the country of origin of the vehicle to be allowed for duty-free import.
  • The exemption is given for the import of one motor vehicle by the foreign residents who are staying temporarily in Somalia. They must import the vehicle within 6 months of arrival in the country. Also, the vehicle must have been registered in the name of the shipper.
For returning diplomats, the importation of used Japanese vehicles in Somalia is not duty-free. However, the duties and taxes on behalf of the diplomats are paid by the Department of Foreign Affairs through a voucher. It may take 3 months for the issue of the voucher. Unless the voucher is issued, vehicle clearance can not be done.
