Left-hand drive vehicles are permitted for import from Japan.

Age Restriction:

The used vehicles which are less than a year old or more than 10 years old are prohibited for import from Japan.

One customer is allowed to import only one vehicle. The used vehicle from Japan to be imported must operate on lead-free gasoline. Only the vehicles from the WTO member countries are permitted for import in Taiwan.

Inspection:

Environmental protection inspection and energy efficiency standard tests would be done on the used Japanese car and then the Certificate of Title will be given.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) supervises the inspection of the vehicle to be imported in Taiwan. Details of test centers can be found out from the local offices for motor vehicles.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR IMPORT OF VEHICLES
  • Registration certificate (original)
  • Passport
  • Insurance
  • Customs declaration
  • Work permit (which is valid for at least one year)
  • Invoice for vehicle purchase (it must clearly show the date of purchase and the amount)
TAXATION
  • 17.5% of the customs value will be imposed as Import duty.
  • 5% of the value of the car to be imported will be charged as VAT.
  • 25-30% of the car’s value will be imposed as Commodity tax and the charge depends on the engine used in the car.
  • 5% cumulative of the Customs value, Import duty, and Commodity tax will be levied as Business tax.
GUIDELINES TO GET LICENSE PLATE FROM TAIWAN
  • To get a license plate in Taiwan, an application is to be made at the local motor vehicle office.
  • Inspection of the used Japanese car would be done.
  • Documents required to get Taiwanese license plate are:
  • Identity proof
  • License plate registration certificate (2 copies)
  • Certificate of customs clearance
  • Certificate of the manufacturer of the vehicle
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
